An ¹ÏÉñÍø faculty member and staffer, personnel from the National Weather Service, and a 13NewsNow meteorologist will participate in a panel discussion about Virginia's tornado hazards.

The Tornado Virtual Panel will be held at 12:30 p.m. March 16 in conjunction with Severe Weather Awareness Week. You can view the Zoom event at this link: . A statewide tornado drill will be also held at 9:45 a.m. that day.

The panel will provide perspectives on identifying and communicating tornado risks, information on the ¹ÏÉñÍø campus community's "Storm Ready" program and on becoming a trained storm "Spotter."

Featured panelists and topics are:

  • Michael Allen, associate professor of geography, on Virginia's tornado risk.
  • Rachael Peart, meteorologist for 13NewsNow, on tornado risk communication and media.
  • Jared Hoernig, ¹ÏÉñÍø emergency manager, on ¹ÏÉñÍø's StormReady campus program.

Local National Weather Service meteorologists, who will introduce their SKYWARN Spotter Training.

Free and online, SKYWARN Spotter Training is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. March 16 and 10 a.m. March 18 (pre-register at )
