MET (Monarch English Transition) Programs

Conditionally admitted students can join the ELC's Monarch English Transition Program (formerly known as the Bridge Program). The Undergraduate and Graduate Monarch English Transition (MET) Programs combine two English language support courses with one to two courses in the student's academic field. Successful completion of the semester-long MET Program satisfies the University's English proficiency requirement.

Conditionally admitted students may enter the MET by successfully meeting the Level 2 exit requirements of the 圖朸厙 ELC's Intensive English Program or by scoring a 500-547 on the TOEFL ITP, 61-78 on the TOEFL iBT, or 5.5-6.0 on the IELTS.

How to Apply

International students must submit an application to the Office of International Admissions.

Permanent Residents must submit a domestic application to the Office of Admissions. Upon acceptance to 圖朸厙, students with the requisite English proficiency level are placed in the MET Program.

MET Programs

The Undergraduate MET Program is a university program designed for undergraduate students who are nonnative English speakers. Conditionally admitted students can enter the MET Program by meeting the Level 2 exit requirements of the 圖朸厙 ELC's Intensive English Program or by scoring a 500-547 on the TOEFL ITP, 61-78 on the TOEFL iBT, or 5.5-6.0 on the IELTS.

The Undergraduate MET Program curriculum combines 6-8 hours of credit courses with two noncredit courses in English as a second language.

Credit Courses

With the help of an advisor, Undergraduate MET Program students enroll in up to 2 classes (8 hours) of credit course work in their academic program.

Noncredit English as a Second Language Courses

In addition to the credit courses, the Undergraduate MET student enrolls in 8-hours of noncredit ESL classes. The curriculum of the Undergraduate MET Program focuses on writing a research paper, applying critical thinking skills, and learning American academic culture. These are skills that will result in incoming undergraduate international students that are better prepared to succeed in 圖朸厙's academic programs.

Length of Study

The Undergraduate MET Program is a one semester program. Undergraduate MET Program students fully meet 圖朸厙's English proficiency requirement by scoring a 550 or higher on the TOEFL ITP, 79 or higher on the TOEFL iBT, 6.5 on the IELTS, or by successfully completing the Undergraduate MET Program with a grade point average of 2.5 in their credit courses and grades of C or higher and 85% attendance or higher in their English noncredit courses.

The Graduate MET Program is a university program designed for graduate students who are nonnative English speakers. Conditionally admitted students can enter the MET Program by meeting the Level 2 exit requirements of the 圖朸厙 ELC's Intensive English Program or by scoring a 500-547 on the TOEFL ITP, 61-78 on the TOEFL iBT, or 5.5-6.0 on the IELTS. Graduate programs have differing admissions criteria. Please check with your graduate academic program to determine whether they accept participation in the MET Program.

The Graduate MET Program curriculum combines 3-4 hours of credit courses with two noncredit courses in English as a second language.

Non-credit English as a Second Language Courses

MET Repeat Policy

Students not meeting the successful completion requirements will have the ability to repeat the MET semester under the following circumstances:

  1. If the student meets the GPA requirement for either Academic or the English component.

    • Undergraduate: Students receiving a "C" or better in both English classes may be allowed to take only one of the English classes during the repeat semester.
    • Graduate: Students receiving a "C" or better in both English classes may be allowed to take only one of the English classes during the repeat semester.
  2. If the student is not on academic warning after the first semester
  3. If the GPD or academic advisor requests in writing a second semester for the student.

Students not meeting any of the above criteria will have their case reviewed by the MET advisory committee to determine if a second semester is warranted.

Students not receiving a second semester will have the ability to submit other accepted forms of English proficiency to continue their studies.

Students unsuccessful in a second semester of MET will not be allowed a third semester except in extreme hardship cases due to illness or other issues beyond the student's control.
