The ¹ÏÉñÍø Police Department has partnered with the Office of Risk Management to design a driver improvement program that provides the information, instructions and training that will:

  • enable vehicle operators to avoid situations that may compromise their safety or the safety of those in the vicinity of the vehicle
  • ensure vehicle operators avoid damaging the vehicle or any of its accessories

The ¹ÏÉñÍø Police Department facilitates two types of Driver Improvement Training courses: the DMV Training program, which is open to the public for $60/attendee; and the ¹ÏÉñÍø Employee Training which is a condensed training (based on DMV program) and offered at no charge to ¹ÏÉñÍø employees, such as those required to take it to drive state vehicles.

DMV Training

  • Cost: $60 per attendee
  • Time: 1 day (8 hours)
  • Open to public (¹ÏÉñÍø or non-¹ÏÉñÍø)
  • Safe driving points may be awarded

¹ÏÉñÍø Employee Training

  • Cost: Free for ¹ÏÉñÍø employees
  • Time: Half day (4 hours)
  • Only for ¹ÏÉñÍø Faculty/Staff/Students; Required for any employees driving state vehicles
  • No points awarded (voluntary)

Safe driving points are awarded for drivers 18 and over. Drivers under age 18 will not be awarded safe driving points if the clinic attendance was required by DMV.

Safe driving points might be awarded awarded for a full schedule.

When signing up for a clinic, you must:

  • Let the clinic provider know your reason for attending the clinic.
  • Provide a government-issued photo ID.
  • If you are required by the court to attend a driver improvement clinic and the court has determined that you are to be awarded safe driving points, present this documentation to the clinic.

  • Demerit points are assigned when you are convicted of a traffic violation and remain valid for two years from the date you commit the offense.
  • Safe driving points are assigned for each full calendar year that you hold a valid Virginia driver's license and drive without any violations or suspensions. In some cases, you may also earn safe driving points by completing a driver improvement clinic. Annual safe driving points are awarded in early April of each year for the previous calendar year.
