Tenure Recipients for Academic Year 23-24

Dr. Abby Braitman received her Ph.D. from 圖朸厙s in Applied Experimental Psychology program (now Health Psychology). She then completed an NIH-sponsored Postdoctoral Fellowship (the F32 Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award) before joining 圖朸厙s faculty.

Dr. Chen received a B.S. in Business Administration from the National Taiwan University, an M.B.A. from the University of California Los Angeles, and a Ph.D. in Organization and Management from Emory University. He joined 圖朸厙 as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Management in 2017. Prior to 圖朸厙, he was the Data Director of the Entrepreneurship Database Program at Emory University (20162017).

Dr. Andrew Collins has applied, both academically and practically, analytical techniques to a variety of practical Operations Research problems with a focus on Agent-based Modeling and Simulation (ABMS). These projects include an award-winning investigation into the foreclosure contagion effect.

Dr. Matthew DiLorenzo is an Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science & Geography and the Graduate Program in International Studies at 圖朸厙 in Norfolk, VA. He teaches courses in international politics and research design. Previously, he worked as a Research Analyst at AidData in Williamsburg, VA. His research has appeared in numerous outlets including International Studies Quarterly, World Development, Journal of Peace Research, Political Research Quarterly, Social Science Quarterly, International Interactions, Conflict Management and Peace Science, Foreign Policy Analysis, and The Chinese Journal of International Politics.

Dr. Cassie Glenn is an Associate Professor of Clinical Psychology and directs the Youth Risk & Resilience Lab (YR2 Lab) at 圖朸厙. Her research focuses on understanding the psychological processes that lead to suicidal and non-suicidal self-injury in youth, improving prediction of these behaviors in youth, and identifying modifiable targets for intervention and prevention in youth. Dr. Glenn also teaches at the undergraduate and graduate level as well as mentors master's and doctoral students.

Dr. Martin Goossen is an Associate Professor in the Department of Management of 圖朸厙's Strome College of Business with teaching and research activities in the area of strategy, innovation, and entrepreneurship. He is currently the Interim Associate Dean for Graduate Programs with a particular responsibility for the MBA program.

Dr. Gutierrez received a B.S. in Biology from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, an M.Ed. in (Science) Education from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, and a Ph.D. in Science Education from North Carolina State University. She joined 圖朸厙 as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Teaching and Learning in 2017. Prior to 圖朸厙, she was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at North Carolina State (20162017).

Dr. Jayarathna received a B.S. in Computer Science from the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka, an M.S. in Computer Science from Texas State University, and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Texas A&M University. He joined 圖朸厙 as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science in 2018. Prior to 圖朸厙, he was an Assistant Professor at California State Polytechnic University (20162018).

Dr. Rip Hale received his Ph.D. in Geological Oceanography from the University of Washington in 2014, completed a postdoc at Vanderbilt University in 2016 and then joined the 圖朸厙 faculty.

Dr. Kissel received a B.A. in Philosophy from Georgetown University and a Ph.D. in Philosophy from The Ohio State University. He joined 圖朸厙 as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Philosophy & Religious Studies in 2018. Prior to his appointment as an Assistant Professor, he was a Lecturer in the Department of Philosophy & Religious Studies at 圖朸厙 (20172018).

Dr. Konkol received a B.A. in English from Reed College, an M.A. in English from the University of Virginia, and a Ph.D. in English from the State University of New York at Buffalo. She joined 圖朸厙 as an Assistant Professor in the Department of English in 2016. Prior to 圖朸厙, she was a Visiting Assistant Professor at the New College of Florida (20142016).

Dr. Lindstrom received a B.A. in English from St. Cloud State University, an M.A. in Linguistics from the University of Wisconsin, and a Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of New Mexico. She joined 圖朸厙 as an Assistant Professor in the Department of English in 2017. Prior to 圖朸厙, she was a Teaching Assistant of Linguistics at the University of New Mexico (20122017).

As an educator, James Morrow has worked as full-time dance faculty/ Associate Professor of Dance at Northeastern Illinois University, Florida State College at Jacksonville, the Episcopal School of Jacksonville, the Hartford Academy for the Arts, the Pioneer Valley Performing Arts, and Salem State University. Mr. Morrow was on Faculty at the American Dance Festival (summer 2010) and at the Bates Dance Festival's Youth Arts Program (2018-2020). He received a fellowship to Hollins University/The American Dance Festival (2011) where he earned his M.F.A. in Dance. He is currently an Associate Professor of Dance at 圖朸厙.

Dr. Osorio received a B.A. in English from California Polytechnics State University, an M.A. in English from San Francisco State University, and a Ph.D. in English from The University of Maryland. She joined 圖朸厙 as an Assistant Professor with a joint appointment in the Department of Womens & Gender Studies and the Department of English in 2018. Prior to 圖朸厙, she was an English instructor at the University of Maryland (20142016).

Dr. Jay O'Toole earned his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and holds a Bachelor of Science from Miami University. His research focuses on how teams and organizations can quickly coordinate collective actions by leveraging knowledge-based resources. Dr. O'Toole is a former member of Teach For America, through which he taught high school mathematics in Greenville, MS. Shortly after that, he started his second business, a nonprofit devoted to began a career in education consulting through his work with the Institute for Research and Reform in Education (IRRE). During his time working with the IRRE, Dr. O'Toole delivered professional development workshops on how to increase classroom teaching and learning efficacy, and he also helped develop technological systems and tools to gather, analyze, and report data used to guide school and district leadership decisions on how best to deploy resources to improve learning outcomes.

Dr. Taryn Raschdorf is Associate Professor of Music Education at 圖朸厙, where she teaches courses in elementary and secondary choral Music Education and serves as the Advisor for the collegiate NAfME chapter. Dr. Raschdorf earned a Ph.D. in Music Education from the University of Colorado, Boulder. She holds a Bachelor and Master of Music in Music Education from 圖朸厙. Dr. Raschdorfs research areas include mentoring and supporting novice music educators, building relationships in the teacher education community, professional development for music educators, music skills and education for classroom teachers, and maintaining musicality in music teaching.

Dr. Leryn Reynolds graduated with a B.S. in Kinesiology from the University of Illinois in 2007, an M.S. in Clinical Exercise Physiology from Ball State University, and her Ph.D. Exercise Physiology from the University of Missouri in 2014. Dr. Reynolds completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Kentucky in the Department of Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences in 2017, examining the contributions of both negative (smoking/ environmental contaminants) and positive (exercise) behaviors during pregnancy on offspring obesity and type 2 diabetes risk.

Dr. Eric Schussler worked as a physical therapist for 10 years prior to completing his Ph.D. at Ohio State University. His current research interests include concussion prevention through improving tackling form, concussion and brain injury identification in contact athletes and bio-mechanical injury risk screening for athletes.

Dr. Kun Xie received his Ph.D. degree in Transportation Planning and Engineering from New York University. Prior to joining 圖朸厙, he worked as a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in the Department of Civil and Natural Resources Engineering at University of Canterbury and as a Postdoctoral Associate in the Center for Urban Science and Progress (CUSP) at New York University. Dr. Xies research concentrates on the development of data-driven and technical solutions to enhance the safety, efficiency, and resiliency of transportation systems.

Promotion to Full Professor

Dr. Orlando Ayala received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering with honors (Cum Laude) from La Universidad de Oriente (Venezuela) in 1995, M.S. in Mechanical Engineering in 2001 and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering in 2005, both from the University of Delaware (USA). Dr. Ayala is currently serving as a Professor in the Department of Engineering Technology in the Batten College of Engineering and Technology, 圖朸厙, Norfolk, VA.

Dr. Butler received a B.S. in History and a M.A.T. in Secondary Education from Georgia College & State University, and a Ph.D. in Social Studies Education from the University of Georgia. He joined 圖朸厙 as an Assistant Professor in 2011 in the Department of Teaching & Learning and has been an Associate Professor since 2017.

Dr. Jamie Colwell is a Professor of Literacy in the Darden College of Education & Professional Studies. She received her Ph.D. in Curriculum & Instruction, Literacy from Clemson University in 2012. Her research interests include disciplinary literacy, teacher education in literacy, and the uses of technology to promote literacy.

Dr. Daas received a B.A. in Spanish Language and Literature from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and an M.A. and a Ph.D. in Hispanic Literature from the University of Texas at Austin. She joined 圖朸厙 as an Assistant Professor in 2002 in the Department of World Languages & Cultures and was promoted to an Associate Professor in 2008. Dr. Daas currently serves as the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies and Administration for the College of Arts & Letters.

Dr. Mujde Erten-Unal worked in consulting as a project engineer prior to joining 圖朸厙. Her research areas include adaptation design to sea level rise, wastewater treatment, pollution prevention and sustainable development.

Dr. Emily Goodman-Scott is a Professor and School Counseling Coordinator in the Department of Counseling and Human Services at 圖朸厙, in Virginia. She is also the Director of the Holmes Scholar Program, for the Darden College of Education & Professional Studies.

Dr. Wallace received a B.S. and an M.A. in Biology from The College of William and Mary and a Ph.D. in Evolution, Ecology, and Organismal Biology from The Ohio State University. She joined 圖朸厙 as an Associate Professor in 2017 in the Department of Biological Sciences.

Dr. Jing Zhang joined the faculty at 圖朸厙 in 2012. She has worked for Iowa State University, City University London and Lancaster University in England and Legend Co. in Beijing, China.

Dr. Elaine Murphy is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Psychology. Her teaching specialties include Quantitative Methods and Developmental Psychology. She received her Ph.D. at 圖朸厙 in 2020, and her research focused on developmental patterns in relationship violence. Dr. Murphy also serves as an Undergraduate Advisor for the Department of Psychology. In her free time, she is an avid carpenter, plays kickball, and spends time with her three daughters.

Ms. Michelle Carpenter serves as a Master Lecturer of Marketing in the Strome College of Business at 圖朸厙 in Norfolk, Virginia. Ms. Carpenter actively collaborates with companies in her classes and pursues research related to education, experiential learning, and social media marketing. She holds an M.A. in Communications from the University of Louisiana at Monroe and an MBA with a specialization in Marketing from 圖朸厙.

Andrew Cohen is the winner of FMA's 2019 Innovative Teacher of the Year Award, 圖朸厙's 2019 Teaching with Technology Award, a University Distinguished Teacher Award, and an Entsminger Fellow, Outstanding Non-Tenure Faculty Award. Mr. Cohen is the Trading Room Manager and Finance Lecturer at 圖朸厙. He received his MBA from NYU.

Dr. T. Steven Cotter is a Master Lecturer with the Department of Engineering Management and Systems Engineering at 圖朸厙. He is a Certified Quality Engineer and Certified Reliability Engineer with the American Society for Quality. He holds certifications as a SQL Server Application Developer and Database Administrator. He has over 40 years of experience in quality and production engineering and management in automated chemicals manufacturing, automated computer manufacturing, and defense electronics.

Dr. Christina Steel is a Master Lecturer teaching Evolution and Cell Biology at 圖朸厙 and Co-Director of the MonarchTeach program, which prepares future middle- and high- school STEM educators. Dr. Steel holds a Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences. Her research focused on how the immune system responds to viral infections of the brain and in commercially funded dermatology research.

Clinical Faculty Promotions

Dr. Donna Rose serves as Course Coordinator for Adult Health Nursing I & N393: Clinical Skills for Non-nursing Majors. Dr. Rose was the recipient of a Faculty Innovator Grant award Using Video to Enhance Patient Handoff and Student Nurse Simulation. She has been recognized as a caring and supportive role model by students and was voted a Shining Star amongst faculty by residential students. She continues to practice nursing at Sentara Leigh Hospital.

Dr. Christine Sump is an Clinical Associate Professor in the Undergraduate Nursing Program. She received her BSN from Saint Joseph University in West Hartford, CT, an MSN from 圖朸厙, and DNP from Case Western Reserve University. Dr. Sump joined the 圖朸厙 faculty in 2010.

Research Faculty Promotions

Dr. Shanan Chappell Moots currently serves as Research Professor and Director of Research Analytics in The Center for Educational Partnerships at 圖朸厙. She is also a Research Fellow with the National Dropout Prevention Center.
