The Excellence in Graduate Teaching Award is to honor one outstanding tenured faculty member for excellence in graduate teaching. Each college may nominate two faculty members.
This award winner is announced at the annual Faculty Recognition & Awards ceremony. Please send your nominations for your respective colleges via email to the college coordinator by the established deadline. The Associate/Assistant Dean of the college must submit the nomination to the Graduate School viaÌýemail.

Eligibility & Nominations Criteria

Only current or previously employed, tenured, graduate faculty who supervise doctoral students at the University for at least five years are eligible.

Nominations are accepted from current or former graduate students, faculty members, department chairs, graduate program directors, advisors, and administrators. Individual faculty members may nominate themselves.

The nomineeÌýmust notÌýhave received the Graduate Teaching Award during the previous five years.
Letters of nomination must address the candidate’s record of excellence and innovation in teaching. This includes the development of interdisciplinary or non-traditional initiatives, links to student outcomes, and connecting teaching to practical applications (where appropriate).
Nomination packets should include the following and must be submitted as a single PDF and include the following materials:

A statement by the nominee describing their teaching philosophy and what they have done to deserve the award.

A brief CV focused on teaching.

Other significant College- or University-level teaching awards.
-
A letter of nomination from a tenured faculty member of at least equal rank (to avoid potential conflicts of interest).

Student Opinion Surveys.

Optional: Support letters from students. A support letter from the Dean.
Nominations Process & Schedule
The Dean selects the college coordinator for this award. We encourage graduate students, faculty, and administrators to submit nominations via email to their department chair. Then, the chair/supervisor certifies faculty eligibility before sending it to the college coordinator.
- Selection of the College Coordinator by the Dean or Designee: Monday, November 4, 2024.
- Nomination packets must be sent to your department chair by Monday, December 2, 2024.
- The department chair must submit it to the College Coordinator by Friday, January 10, 2025.
- College Coordinator must submit nominations to the Associate or Assistant Dean of the college: Friday, January 31, 2025.
- Nominations submitted to the Graduate School: Monday, February 14, 2025.
The Associate Dean/Assistant Dean must submit the nominations for their respective colleges to the Graduate School. Please send nomination packets to the Graduate School via email.ÌýPlease send it as one PDF file to graduateschool@odu.edu.
Awards & Presentation
Graduate Teaching Award winners receive $2,500 and have their names displayed on a plaque in a centralized location. Winners are announced at the annual Faculty Recognition and Awards ceremony.
