The application period for Summer admissions has closed. Please check back in August to apply for the Spring semester.

The Teacher in Residence (TIR) program is a fast-track into teaching. TIR's earn both a master's degree and initial teaching licensure in the area of secondary education/mathematics, science, or new in 2018-19, Special Education: K-12 General Curriculum. The TIR program is a partnership between ¹ÏÉñÍø and Norfolk/Newport News Public Schools, through shared funding from the school divisions with grant support from the Virgina Department of Education and is based on the needs of the partnering school district. This page displays the application process for candidates interested in participating in the Teacher in Residence program.

  • Register and/or secure score reports for all required tests for your track. Pay attention to the last day to test.
  • Follow-up with your references. All recommendations must be submitted before the date of the onsite selection process.
  • Give your application thought and care; write your reflective questions with the track you have applied for in mind. Be prepared to upload your word file during the application process.
  • Submit an unofficial copy of all scores and transcripts to TIR, Attn: Dr. Burrell-Craft.
  • ´¡±ô±ôÌý°¿¹ó¹ó±õ°ä±õ´¡³¢Ìýscore reports will need to be sent to ¹ÏÉñÍø Teacher Education Services. This includes SAT/ACT scores, or Praxis Core/Math, the Virginia Communication and Literacy Assessment (VCLA) and the Praxis subject tests.
  • Apply to the program by the program deadline for priority consideration.

  • Go to the Graduate Admissions website
  • Complete application to the main campus, on-campus program; DO NOT apply as an online student. Questions concerning the admissions process may be directed toÌýadmissions@odu.edu, 757-683-3685.
    • Create an AccountÌý- Simply click on the button "Create Account" to the right of this page. If you already have a login to ¹ÏÉñÍø's portal for prospective undergraduate students (your "my dominion" page), please use those same account credentials to complete your application.
    • Application -ÌýYour application and the optional materials, including letters of recommendation, essay and resume, can be submitted electronically as part of the application process. After submitting your application, if you have corrections or changes, please contact the admissions office.ÌýStudents apply to Graduate School as "Summer Admissions."
    • Application Fee -ÌýWhen you have completed your application and are ready to submit it, you will need to pay your application fee via the Apply Yourself system. Please note that your application will not be reviewed until payment is received.
    • Submit your Application ElectronicallyÌý-Clicking on the "Submit Your Application" button will allow us to begin processing your application.
    • Check the Status of your Applicaton -ÌýAt any time, you can log into the Apply Yourself system and check the status of your application.

  • For special education track candidates: Apply for the Master of Science in Education, Special Education, General Curriculum K-12 Concentration
  • For science and math education track candidates: Apply for the TIR/Master of Science in Education under Special Tracks
  • For candidates seeking admission to the ADVANCED PLACEMENT program, apply for the Master of Science in Education, Secondary Education.
  • Request that your official Score Reports be sent to ¹ÏÉñÍø School of Education, Teacher Education Services and forward an unofficial score report to TIR
  • A background check will be conducted through your school division

  • All top candidates will be invited to a campus interview held at ¹ÏÉñÍø

  • All invited candidates MUST ATTEND the interview

  • Your on-site interview will include these elements:
    • Providing a writing sample
    • Participation in a group discussion
    • Completing a personal interview
    • Mingling with the leadership of the school district &/or ¹ÏÉñÍø Faculty

  • Sign the Agreement before a Notary and return to TIR and bring to first day of TIR program in April.
  • Request that a final college transcript (if graduating in May) be sent to ¹ÏÉñÍø Graduate Admissions.
  • Classes start May 1.
