Students who are graduating at the end of the current term will have a hold that prevents further registration.

If you still need to take courses to complete program requirements, e-mail graduation@odu.eduÌýto notify the University Registrar of your new graduation term and to request that the hold be lifted.

If you wish to continue taking classes after you graduate, you must be readmitted as a degree-seeking or non-degree student. Once you have been admitted to a new degree program, or have been admitted to take courses as a non-degree student following graduation, the hold will be removed. If the hold remains after you have been admitted, e-mail register@odu.edu for assistance.

Advising Staff

University policy requires all degree-seeking students to be advised, whether or not a major has been declared. Students must contact an advisor to consult on the degree completion plan in order for the hold to be lifted.

  • All new first-year students will meet with the advisor during Monarch Orientation if attending classes on the main campus.

Office of Finance (Accounts Receivable)

These holds are placed when the student's account becomes past due or is submitted to the collection agency. The tuition deadline is posted well in advance of the beginning of each semester and students should have financing for attendance at the University planned prior to enrolling in classes. Occasionally, an Athletics accounts receivable hold, used infrequently, occurs if a student-athlete has not returned equipment (laptop, athletic equipment, books) and is required to do so by coaches and/or administrators. The reason included on this hold: Return of athletic equipment required.

(Accounts Receivable Hold)
This hold is placed on the student's record when the student has a debt to the University. The hold does not prohibit registration (drop, add or course withdrawal).

This hold is used when miscellaneous documentation is needed from the student.

This hold is placed on all admitted students and requires them to disclose any criminal history. Complete the criminal background history questionnaire in theÌýÌýunder the holds section, to begin the hold removal process.

In most cases, the hold is removed immediately following the completion of the form. In some cases, the student may be required to submit additional documents, which will prompt another review.

Athletics

The AT hold is the primary hold used by Athletics. Student-athletes are associated with their sport code in the administrative system beginning with orientation. This hold is placed by the athletic advising staff and used to prevent student-athletes or staff on campus from changing registration schedules for the student-athletes, ensuring full-time enrollment of at least 12 hours and fulfilling other University and NCAA requirements. The student must see one of the student-athlete advisors before making any schedule changes.

The Graduate School

All degree-seeking and post-baccalaureate (teacher licensure) graduate students admitted or readmitted since Fall 2010 are required to complete training in the fundamentals of Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR). This training must be completed prior to the completion of 12 semester hours. Students who do not complete the RCR training will have a hold preventing registration and graduation until the training is completed. Students can check DegreeWorks for the entry showing that the training has been completed.

Graduate students who end a semester of attendance with less than a 3.0 GPA will be placed on academic warning. This hold informs the student that he or she may continue to enroll in undergraduate courses, but not in graduate courses. Student cannot use LEO Online to register; must submit completed registration form.

Non-degree students are eligible to enroll in up to 12 academic credits prior to making formal application for admission to a degree program. After the 12th hour has been exceeded, this hold will be placed on the student's record. If the student does not plan to enroll in a degree program, but is engaged in life-long learning activities, licensure or a certificate program, the student should inform The Graduate School of future enrollment intention.

Students who receive this warning hold may continue to enroll in life-long learning courses, licensure or certificate programs; however if the student exceeds 11.99 hours, then the GF will be applied. If the student does not plan to enroll in a degree program, but is engaged in life-long learning activities, licensure or a certificate program, the student should inform The Graduate School of future enrollment intention. The GF hold is restrictive; the GW hold is not.

Graduate students who have the Program Dismissal hold have been dismissed from their program, and are not allowed to register for any graduate or undergraduate classes for a period of eight (8) years following the dismissal, unless they are admitted into a new program, or an approved exception is made.

Student Outreach and Support (S.O.S.)

This hold is placed on the records of students who default on a Student Emergency Loan made by the SOS Office. Repayment is 30 days from the date of the loan. Students who fail to repay the loan in full by 5pm EST on the repayment date will have a financial hold placed on their record. Holds are removed within 24 hours of receipt of payment.

Assessment Office

Freshmen students are required to complete a transition to college inventory (TCI) questionnaire in advance of attending the University. The TCI helps staff at the University to understand characteristics of students in the class in order to facilitate their transition to the University. The TCI is normally completed during Preview. Students who do not attend Preview will have the TCI hold placed and will not be able to register.

The Senior Assessment (Senior Student Satisfaction Survey) is a University requirement for graduation. It must be completed during the semester in which the student plans to graduate and is available to students who have applied for graduation and are "pending" for graduation in the records of the Registrar's Office. A personal invitation will be sent to the student's ¹ÏÉñÍø email address. Students who have not completed the Senior Assessment can participate in commencement ceremonies, but the degree will not be posted to the record and the diploma will be withheld until the survey has been completed and submitted to the Office of Assessment.

Academic Continuance & Transfer Programs

This hold will be placed on the records of students who are suspended from the University. This hold prevents further registration unless the student has successfully appealed suspension or the suspension period has been served and the student has been reactivated or readmitted to the University.

Writing Placement and Support

This hold was placed on the records of students who transferred in credit for English 110C and were required to take the Writing Sample Placement Test (WSPT) prior to or during the first semester at the University. If they passed, they were to have met the initial writing requirement. If they did not pass, they were required to meet with a Writing Center counselor to review their test. If students did not take or had not reviewed the test at the end of their first semester, a hold was placed on registration for the next semester. This policy has been discontinued. Any student with a WC hold may have it removed by a university official authorized to release holds or may contact writingplacement@odu.edu to request its removal.
